  • VLSI-MEMS Lab

  • Biomedical Research Lab

  • BioNIUM Nanofab Clean Room

VLSI-MEMS Design Lab

Located at J. Neville McArthur Engineering Building, University of Miami Coral Gables campus, this laboratory houses four high performance desktop PCs and two servers. One of the servers is dedicated to running FEM tool Comsol 5.3, and the other server hosts VLSI CAD tool Cadence ICFB 6.10. Software products such as OriginPro, Endnote, QUOSA, 3dsmax, etc. are run on the desktop PCs, and a wide variety of useful tools including Coventorware and ANSYS are readily available in the cloud computing system of the College of Engineering. For electronic testing purposes, the design laboratory includes an Agilent DSOX3034A oscilloscope along with multimeters, power supplies, and signal/function generators. In addition to the general-purpose electronic testing equipment, our lab hosts a tabletop atomic force microscope (AFM) and a high performance ferroelectric tester. AFM and ferroelectric tester can be combined to form a piezo nano displacement system (PNDS), which can measure nanometer scale displacements on piezoelectric films. Other equipment in our lab includes a 3D printer for quick prototyping and an electrodynamic shaker for vibration tests.

BIONIUM Nanofab Clean Room

BioNIUM facilities of University of Miami (UM) are utilized for microfabrication purposes. The list of available processes ranges from regular and e-beam lithography, sputtering, and evaporation to chemical and dry etching with a variety of dedicated systems including: Trion ICP, Angstorm sputter system, OAI contact mask aligner, Heidelberg mask maker, and JEOL SEM. More information on the facilities along with a complete list of available systems and processes are accessible through:

Biomedical Research Lab

This clinical research laboratory is one of the newest state-of-the-art research facilities located at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. In addition to the 2 desktop PCs in the laboratory by Dell, a wide variety of electrical testing equipment is present. We have the capability to test microfabricated devices using our manual probe station. A fume hood and a biosafety cabinet are available for various fabrication processes. Furthermore, the labs are adequately equipped with all the equipment necessary for appropriate storage of temperature sensitive tissue samples, reagents and chemicals, sterile tissue culture for model system experiments, protein-based assays, performance of gene expression analysis in sterile, nuclease-free workspaces, and histologic characterization of various tissues by light and fluorescent microscopy. UM Pathology has access to clinical samples through various ongoing clinical trials and collaborative participation from the UM Hospital, UMHC/Sylvester Cancer Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the Holtz Children's Hospital.
